Tuchel tells England to switch on as Kane closes on cap record against Croatia

Thomas Tuchel has spoken to ITV about England’s mindset ahead of their Nations League meeting with Croatia in Rijeka. The England manager said the squad’s time on the sunny Adriatic coast had helped the players unwind and recharge, but stressed that they now need to switch on, describing the atmosphere as very different and adding that his side want to make the game really competitive and are up for it.

On selection matters, Tuchel praised Alex Scott, saying the midfielder did so well when he made his debut and describing him as the full package. He also pointed to the defensive workload on Jarell Quansah’s side, where Ivan Perišić will be the threat, and noted that Trent Alexander-Arnold is available as an option from the bench, with the manager hoping England can get the edge in physicality.

The match is also a landmark occasion for a number of players. Harry Kane will win his 124th cap for England, leaving him just one appearance short of Peter Shilton’s all-time record of 125. Jordan Pickford is next in line with his 92nd cap, while Bukayo Saka will reach 58.

Croatia’s line-up carries far greater experience. Luka Modrić will earn his 203rd cap, with Ivan Perišić and Mateo Kovačić winning their 159th and 118th respectively, and Andrej Kramarić set to collect his 120th Croatian cap should he get on at any point. Kick-off is at 5pm BST, 6pm local time.
