WSL roundup: London City Lionesses hit Tottenham for six as Chelsea and Brighton cruise

The afternoon’s Women’s Super League fixtures are done and dusted, and they produced a run of emphatic scorelines. London City Lionesses were the day’s biggest winners, beating Tottenham 6-1, while Brighton hammered Charlton 5-1 and Chelsea enjoyed an emphatic victory at West Ham, where Keira Walsh was on the scoresheet. Everton beat Birmingham 2-1, with Ruby Mace scoring both of their goals, and there was more frustration for Aston Villa, who drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace.

Those results leave Chelsea top of the table on 13 points from five matches. London City Lionesses are second on 12 points, also from five games, with a goal difference of +10, and Manchester City are third on 12 points from four matches — a game fewer than the two clubs above them — with a goal difference of +8. Tottenham stay fourth on 10 points despite their heavy home defeat, with Everton fifth on nine.

Further down, Liverpool and Manchester United sit level on seven points, separated by goal difference, while Crystal Palace are eighth on six points. Brighton’s five-goal win lifted them to ninth on five points, level with Arsenal, who are tenth on five points from four games and are the visitors for the day’s late kick-off.

At the bottom, Charlton are still without a point after five matches and have a goal difference of -13. Birmingham have two points, while West Ham and Aston Villa both have three, with Villa’s draw against Palace leaving them 12th on -7 and West Ham 11th on -6.

The main event of the afternoon comes at Manchester City, where Beth Mead starts against her old club. Manchester City have made three changes to the side that drew with Real Madrid in midweek: Sam Coffey and Niamh Charles come into the team, with Laura Brown, Mary Fowler and Kerstin Casparij making way.
