Scott McTominay has returned to training at Napoli following the heart surgery he underwent last month.
The 29-year-old Scotland midfielder had an ablation procedure — a minimally invasive operation used to correct irregular heart rhythms — which took place in Manchester and was described as “a complete success”.
Napoli have now confirmed that the player is available again. In a club statement, they said: “On Wednesday, Scott McTominay underwent further diagnostic tests, which showed that he is fit to play. The Napoli player therefore resumed training with the rest of the team after the period spent training separately.”
The issue first came to light during Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como in August, when McTominay was substituted after 56 minutes. A mild benign arrhythmia was discovered, which prompted the corrective treatment.
An arrhythmia is a condition in which the heart beats too quickly or too slowly, or its rhythm is not steady. The ablation used to treat it involves applying heat or cold energy to create tiny scars in the heart, blocking faulty signals and restoring a typical heartbeat.
McTominay’s absence cost him four Scotland fixtures, including Tuesday’s Nations League defeat by Slovenia. Scotland’s next matches come in November, against Switzerland and North Macedonia.
The midfielder has scored 15 goals in 73 appearances for his country.
