Arsenal 2-1 Leeds United: Bruno Guimarães comes off the bench to seal the comeback

Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 at Emirates Stadium, substitute Bruno Guimarães scoring the winner after Riccardo Calafiori had cancelled out James Justin’s opening goal.

Leeds had taken the lead through a well-worked move finished by James Justin, with Gabriel Gudmundsson supplying the assist. The goal came down Ben White’s side of the defence, and the cross evaded goalkeeper David Raya, who had earlier made a smart save to deny Jayden Bogle and an even better one to keep out Gudmundsson. Leeds had their moments before the break, Noah Okafor going close with an early chance.

Arsenal’s route back into the game came through Calafiori, who scored the equaliser after Ben White’s header set him up. Declan Rice then produced a clever assist for Guimarães’ winner. It had not been a comfortable afternoon for the home side, who struggled to create in the first half — Rice tried to inject some energy, while Martin Ødegaard’s tame effort was saved by James Trafford. Bukayo Saka caused Gudmundsson problems early on but never capitalised on the openings, and he missed a big late chance to add a third.

Kai Havertz was included from the start after picking up a hamstring injury on international duty but did not look at full match sharpness, and Noni Madueke was given the chance to start on the left wing in place of the injured Christos Tzolis, producing some good deliveries without ever becoming a sustained threat. Myles Lewis-Skelly was back in the Arsenal starting line-up after being dropped, though it was not his best day. The back four as a whole, and Gabriel Magalhães in particular, did not deliver the usual convincing performance, while Ezri Konsa was involved in the physical battle against Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Arsenal’s changes on 63 minutes turned the match: Guimarães, Viktor Gyökeres and Jurrien Timber came on for Lewis-Skelly, Havertz and White. Gyökeres brought physicality to the attack, Timber provided a calming presence in the backline, and Guimarães changed the game and scored the winner. Piero Hincapié was introduced on 82 minutes in place of Calafiori to see out the win, and Merino replaced Ødegaard on 90 minutes with no time to make an impact. Arsenal’s unused substitutes were Arrizabalaga, Zubimendi, Eze and Dowman.

For Leeds, Tarik Muharemović dealt with most of what came his way at centre-back, Ao Tanaka was very good on the ball and worked hard alongside Ethan Ampadu, who gave the visitors a solid platform to build from. Anton Stach made his physical presence felt in midfield, and Calvert-Lewin held the ball up very well while giving Konsa and Gabriel a physical battle. Okafor overhit a pass when he had a great chance to play Stach through. Trafford will be disappointed with how he conceded the Arsenal equaliser, though he showed his passing range as he tried to pick out Calvert-Lewin. Jayden Bogle forced Raya into a save with a good half chance in the first half, provided an attacking outlet and defended well, while Justin combined well with Bogle in both attack and defence and made a couple of important clearances to go with his goal.

Leeds made a double change on 71 minutes as they chased a way back into the match, Harry Wilson and Brenden Aaronson replacing Tanaka and Okafor, before Jean-Matteo Bahoya and Jaka Bijol came on for Bogle and Elvedi on 86 minutes with little time to make an impact. Zetterer, Bard, Gruev, Nmecha and Longstaff were the Leeds substitutes who did not get on.

In the ratings, Guimarães was the standout performer of the match with an 8. Calafiori, Rice and Timber were awarded 7 for Arsenal, as were Justin, Muharemović, Gudmundsson and Tanaka for Leeds. At the other end of the scale, Merino, Bahoya and Bijol were given 5s, with the majority of both starting line-ups rated 6.
