Barnsley have announced the death of Barry ‘Spud’ Murphy, the club’s all-time record appearance holder, at the age of 86. Murphy was a defender and full-back whose 569 games for the Tykes made him a central figure in the club’s history.
Murphy joined Barnsley from South Shields and played for the club from 1962 to 1978, spending his entire 16-year Football League career there. His durability was reflected in a club-record run of 182 consecutive appearances, and in 1965 he became the first substitute in Barnsley’s history. In 1972 he was named the club’s player of the year.
His association with Barnsley continued after his playing days. Murphy became a player-coach in 1975 and later served on the coaching staff of manager Allan Clarke. In 1980 he followed Clarke to Leeds United, where he remained until 1984. After retirement, he made guest appearances at Oakwell and often hosted charity events for the club.
Barnsley paid tribute in a message on their X feed, saying they were ‘heartbroken’ to announce his passing. The club described Murphy as ‘an iconic full-back’ and ‘a true Barnsley legend’, noting his record of 569 games for the Reds.
