Mbappé double gives Mourinho’s Real Madrid late Clásico win at Barcelona

Kylian Mbappé scored an 87th-minute winner as José Mourinho’s Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 at Camp Nou, ending Barcelona’s nine-game winning run in the league and preventing them from moving nine points clear. The decisive move came with three minutes remaining: Jude Bellingham’s skill found Eduardo Camavinga, who sprinted into the area, slipped past Pau Cubarsí and pulled the ball back for Mbappé to finish.

Madrid had taken the lead in the 41st minute through Mbappé, though fortune played a part. Marc Cucurella released Yan Diomandé, whose low, hard ball across goal was hit against Mbappé and in by Gerard Martín. Earlier, Pedri’s loose pass had allowed Arda Guler to break and fire over after four minutes, and Lamine Yamal wasted a chance to level when he scuffed wide at the near post. Cucurella’s repeated challenges on Lamine Yamal had also drawn roars from the Camp Nou.

Barcelona equalised on the hour. Lamine Yamal took a corner short to Pedri, who slipped a clever angled, reversed ball into Raphinha to strike low into the net. The noise rose, and both sides had chances: Raphinha was denied, Joan García saved from Guler, and Andriy Lunin made an astonishing stop from Martín’s header. Dean Huijsen then dived in to stop Frenkie de Jong and blocked a Lamine Yamal shot with his face.

Madrid, tired in the second half, resisted and found one last finish. Bellingham’s skill and Camavinga’s run cut Barcelona open, and Mbappé’s second goal was his 10th against Barcelona, though none felt quite like this. It was the first time Barcelona had failed to win in the league this season, and the first time they had failed to win any game since returning to Camp Nou a year earlier.

Mourinho said the football world would have stopped to watch the match and would not have been disappointed, describing it as two teams who played to win. He also said he would not let his players have their heads on the moon, but the result gave Madrid and the title race life: Barcelona, running at 4.3 goals per game, were reduced to one, and the idea of the title race being run before November was set aside.
