El Clásico: The Rivalry That Defines Spanish Football

Real Madrid and FC Barcelona first met in official competition in 1902, and the fixture between them — known simply as El Clásico — has grown into one of the most-watched single matches in the football calendar, played twice every La Liga season regardless of either club’s league position.

More than a football match

The rivalry has historically carried cultural and political weight beyond the pitch, tied to the two clubs’ distinct regional identities within Spain. In the modern game it is also a stage for some of the sport’s biggest individual stars, with a run of Clásicos across the 2000s and 2010s regularly featuring some of the most decorated players of their generation on either side.

Whatever the context of a given season, a Clásico weekend remains one of the most reliably significant dates on the global football calendar.
