Manchester City stayed top of the Premier League with a 5-3 win over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium, an eight-goal contest that left Enzo Maresca’s side with five wins from five.
Antoine Semenyo scored twice for City, finding the net either side of half-time, while Enzo Fernández, Rayan Cherki and Erling Haaland also struck for the hosts. Sunderland repeatedly unsettled them despite the eventual scoreline, levelling at 1-1 and again at 2-2 before later reducing the deficit to 4-3.
Brian Brobbey scored all three of Sunderland’s goals, a hat-trick that was the first by a Black Cats player in a Premier League game since Jermain Defoe in 2016. It kept the visitors in touch throughout, but they fell short of what would have been a famous result at the Etihad.
Rúben Dias produced an acrobatic goalline clearance in the second half to preserve City’s lead, before Haaland made it 5-3 with his first ever goal against Sunderland.
