Bradford City set to appoint Michael Duff as new manager

Bradford City are set to appoint Michael Duff as their new manager. The 48-year-old would take over at Valley Parade from Graham Alexander, who left the club to become manager of Championship side Preston North End.

Duff’s most recent post was at Wycombe Wanderers, where he was sacked last month after a year in charge. Wycombe had brought him in last September as the successor to Michael Dodds following a winless start to the season, and he went on to lead the Chairboys to an 11th-placed finish before departing after three draws and two defeats in their opening five league games of 2026-27.

Bradford are understood to see Duff as a manager capable of continuing the high-energy style of play, built around a 3-4-3 formation, that the team used under Alexander and which carried them from League Two to the upper end of League One. The Bantams currently sit second in League One, level on 16 points with leaders Plymouth Argyle, who have played a game more.

The club’s immediate schedule is unaffected by the change in the dugout. Bradford travel to League Two side Rotherham in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday (19:00 BST) before hosting Leyton Orient in the league on Saturday (15:00 BST).

Duff, a former Northern Ireland international, played alongside Alexander at Burnley during their playing careers. His managerial record began at Cheltenham Town, where he secured promotion from League Two in his first role in charge and then guided the club to their highest-ever EFL finish of 15th in League One in 2021-22 before leaving for Barnsley.

At Barnsley he took the Reds to fourth in the third tier, but they lost the play-off final to South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday, after which he was appointed manager of Championship side Swansea City. That spell in South Wales proved unsuccessful and he was sacked after just six months in charge in December 2023. He returned to Yorkshire with Huddersfield Town in May 2024 but was let go in March the following year after four defeats in five games.
