Celtic report £4.8m loss as revenue drops by 22.7%

Celtic have announced a loss after tax of £4.8m for the year ending June 30, 12 months on from a profit of £33.9m. The club say the shift is largely explained by their failure to secure Champions League participation last season.

The figures show revenue down by 22.7% to £111m, compared with £143.6m the previous year. Celtic, currently the Scottish Premiership leaders, also reported cash in the bank of £66.4m, down from £77.3m.

The accounts follow a campaign that interim chairman Brian Wilson described as “more turbulent than anyone would have wished for”. Celtic went through three different managers during season 2025-26, with Brendan Rodgers departing and Wilfried Nancy fired after an eight-game reign, while chairman Peter Lawwell retired in December, citing “abuse and threats”.

Wilson congratulated Martin O’Neill and his staff for “demonstrating extraordinary resilience” in delivering a league and Scottish Cup double. “The events of the past 12 months have been dramatic, sometimes joyful and at other points deeply frustrating,” he said. “The departure of Brendan Rodgers was an unanticipated event which initiated a period of instability. In other circumstances, the appointment of Wilfried Nancy might have worked but his arrival in mid-season and the changes which followed clearly did not.” He added that parting ways with Nancy was “hugely disappointing” but that decisive action had to be taken, and that O’Neill’s return, supported by his backroom team and the squad, proved a triumphant success.

On recruitment, Wilson said Celtic spent £31.6m this summer to sign Kasper Hogh, Camilo Duran, Mika Baur, Haissem Hassan, Joel van den Berg and Jordan Lotomba, while loan deals were arranged for Landon Emenalo, Shumaira Mheuka, Sam Johnstone and Oliver Sorensen. He did not reveal how much the club made on the sales of players including Daizen Maeda, Arne Engels and Reo Hatate.

The financial update comes with Celtic again in the Europa League this season after a shock capitulation away to LASK in the Champions League play-off. They are out of the League Cup, and their lead at the top of the Premiership has been cut to two points following back-to-back defeats to Rangers. Wilson also referenced the need to improve “communication and supporter engagement”, saying that work was ongoing, and confirmed the search for a permanent chairman continues.
