Everton owners The Friedkin Group explore sale less than two years after takeover

The Friedkin Group is exploring options for Everton that include selling a controlling interest in the club, less than two years after the American group took control at Goodison Park.

The group completed its takeover of Everton in 2024, in a deal believed to be worth in excess of £400m. In a statement, TFG confirmed it is now looking at new investment routes for the club, with a sale of a controlling stake among the possibilities under consideration.

TFG said the decision followed a period in which it had prioritised stability, investment and the opening of Everton’s new stadium last year. The group described the situation it inherited in stark terms, saying the club had faced significant financial uncertainty and challenges both on and off the pitch when TFG became its custodians.

According to the statement, the immediate priority at that point was to provide the stability, investment and support needed to secure Everton’s future, including helping to bring the long-promised stadium to completion for the club’s supporters.

With that foundation now described as safely in place, TFG said the time is right to consider the next chapter for Everton. The group framed the move as an exploration of new investment options rather than a completed transaction, and no buyer or agreement has been confirmed.
