Freiburg missed the chance to return to the top of the Bundesliga, held to a 2-2 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt that cost them their perfect start to the season. Bayern Munich’s 7-0 win over Union Berlin on Friday had moved the Bavarians above Freiburg at the summit, and the visitors were unable to answer with a victory, dropping points for the first time this campaign and remaining second.
The see-sawing encounter in Frankfurt showcased several new members of Jürgen Klopp’s 44-man Germany squad, on both sides. Frankfurt’s Younes Ebnoutalib finished off a fine team move to open the scoring 10 minutes in, just days after celebrating a surprise maiden Germany call-up. Derry Scherhant, another of Klopp’s lesser-known new additions, levelled for Freiburg, only for Jonathan Burkardt to edge Frankfurt back in front. Scherhant then turned provider, creating a second goal for Yuito Suzuki, who secured Freiburg a point and left them level on 10 points with Harry Kane’s Bayern.
West Ham loanee Niclas Füllkrug continued his striking form on his return to Germany, scoring for a third successive Bundesliga match as hosts Werder Bremen came from two goals down to beat Augsburg 3-2. Füllkrug pulled Bremen level with a blistering long-range effort in the 86th minute, before Mitchell Weiser blasted in a winner in stoppage time.
Elsewhere, Hamburg claimed their first goal, first win and first points of the season with a comfortable 2-1 home victory over Cologne. Albert Gronbaek laid on goals for Nicolas Capaldo and Yussuf Poulsen to help the hosts, one of the historical giants of German football, drag themselves off the bottom of the table.
Hamburg climbed past Borussia Mönchengladbach, who suffered a fourth straight defeat in a wild 4-3 loss to visitors Mainz. Just days after bidding farewell to sacked coach Eugen Polanski, things went from bad to worse for the hosts, who also missed a penalty and are now the only Bundesliga side without a point after four matchdays.
