Gateshead have failed to pay their players and staff wages for September, adding to a difficult period for the National League club. The side are bottom of the league and have lost their past five games, conceding 16 goals and scoring just once in that run.
The wage issue follows the withdrawal of funding support by Mark Nellist, who resigned from the board of directors earlier this week. Nellist said the Tyneside club was “not heading in the direction I would have liked or hoped for”.
Interim chairman Graham Wood said the club had been fully focused on seeking new investment following Nellist’s sudden decision. Wood said significant progress had been made in the past 24 hours and that Gateshead were hopeful of making an announcement in the next day or so. He added that, to facilitate those efforts, Nellist had agreed to make his shares available for a nominal sum.
On the pitch, Lee Cattermole’s side are next in action at home to Worthing on Saturday. Gateshead are in their fifth season in the National League since promotion.
