Idah header completes Swansea comeback to keep them top as Birmingham win at West Brom

Adam Idah’s glancing header in the 59th minute completed a Swansea comeback and gave the Championship leaders a 2-1 home win over Norwich. The Republic of Ireland striker had earlier missed three chances in the first half before making amends just before the hour.

Norwich had taken the lead on 28 minutes. A cross from the left forced Stephen Welsh to head over from under the Swansea bar and concede a corner, and although the corner was cleared, Andre Brooks and Oscar Schwartau combined to rob Welsh of the ball, with Schwartau passing across the area for Jacob Wright to score.

Swansea had already passed up a clear opening. Joseph Opoku won the ball on halfway in the 22nd minute and drove to the Norwich area, but Idah took a heavy touch from what looked to be a scoring pass and Vladan Kovacevic saved. Idah had two further chances to level before the break, and again the Norwich goalkeeper was equal to them.

It took Swansea four minutes after the restart to get back on level terms, with Yeo making it three goals in three games. Neat interplay on the left touchline freed Josh Tymon, and his cross was missed at the near post by Idah before Yeo converted at the back post. The winner then came just before the hour, Idah heading home from an inch-perfect cross by Melker Widell.

Norwich pushed for an equaliser and had two good chances in the dying minutes, but Lawrence Vigouroux saved Sam Field’s shot and then watched Jovon Makama head over the bar from five yards out.

At The Hawthorns, West Brom defender Nat Phillips was at fault for the second successive derby as Birmingham won 1-0. Phillips, whose back pass let in Fer Lopez during the 1-0 defeat to Wolves last time out, gave away a 41st-minute penalty this time, catching the forward in the air with a clumsy challenge from a cross. August Priske side-footed the penalty high to Max O’Leary’s left for his second Championship goal of the season. The result leaves the two sides level on 14 points.

Charlton’s winless run in the Championship stretched to six matches after a 1-1 draw with Bristol City at The Valley. Charlton took the lead through Karlan Grant’s second goal of the campaign in the eighth minute, but that advantage was wiped out before the interval by Scott Twine. Bristol City’s Sam Tickle then pulled off two big saves in the second half to keep the home side from finding a winner.
