Ipswich Town investigating racist abuse directed at Abdul Fatawu

Ipswich Town are investigating racist abuse directed at their forward Abdul Fatawu online, with the club describing the messages as “completely unacceptable” and vowing to stand by the player.

In a statement posted on social media, Ipswich said they were aware of “online racist abuse” aimed at the attacker. The club added that the matter was being looked into alongside the Premier League and the relevant authorities, and that Fatawu would continue to receive its full support.

The abuse followed Saturday’s match, in which the 22-year-old Ghanaian winger was sent off during Ipswich’s 1-0 defeat to Everton. Fatawu had been named in the starting line-up at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool but was shown a red card after two bookable offences.

Reaction to the abuse was swift, with many people condemning it on X. The supporters’ group Reach Tractors, which says it celebrates race, ethnicity and cultural heritage within the Ipswich Town fanbase, called for those responsible to be held accountable. “We’re disgusted by reports of racial abuse directed at Abdul Fatawu,” the group said. “Racism has no place in football or society. Everyone at Reach Tractors stands firmly with Abdul.”

Fatawu has made five appearances for Ipswich this season. He joined the club in July from Leicester City in a £20m deal, signing a five-year contract expected to keep him at Ipswich until 2031. During his time with Leicester, he scored nine goals in 44 appearances last season.

At international level, the winger featured in all four of Ghana’s games at the 2026 World Cup, including a group-stage meeting with England, and has scored three goals in 32 appearances for his country.

On signing for Ipswich, Fatawu said he was proud to have joined the club and described its ambition as very exciting, adding that he was looking forward to being part of it as the side prepared for the Premier League season.
