Rabbi Matondo is training with Hibernian as he attempts to win a contract at Easter Road. The 26-year-old Wales international, previously with Rangers, has joined the club at its training camp in La Manga. Matondo is without a club after being released by Brann, the Norwegian side he joined in March following his departure from Ibrox.
Elsewhere, Celtic’s long-running interest in Gvidas Gineitis has been given a fresh nudge by the player himself. The 22-year-old Lithuania midfielder, who plays for Torino, was pursued by the Scottish champions this summer and has now said that a move to Celtic “would be an interesting and rewarding experience”.
At Heart of Midlothian, winger Sabah Kerjota has reflected on an unusual route to international recognition. The 25-year-old, who joined Hearts from Sambenedettese last year, has received a first call-up from Albania and says his journey from Italy’s Serie D to that point is proof that data-driven recruitment can make dreams come true.
Rangers have secured one of their own prospects, with goalkeeper Rydnn McGuire signing a three-year contract. The 17-year-old turned down offers from English clubs before committing, having seen a pathway to the first team at Ibrox.
Bobby Williamson has spoken about his unsuccessful application to become Scotland head coach, admitting the bid was not realistic. He did so despite Ally McCoist, Scott Brown and Kevin Thomson having agreed to act as his assistants, and acknowledged that his European coaching licence lapsed 10 years ago. Williamson nonetheless pointed to a record that includes leading Kilmarnock to a Scottish Cup win and four regional titles with Uganda, describing it as “not a bad career”.
Off the pitch, former Hamilton Academical owner Gerry Strain is preparing legal action against the Scottish Professional Football League. Strain intends to take the SPFL to court unless the matter is settled out of court, following his challenge to the Scottish FA’s decision last year to deem him “not fit and proper” to run the club.
