Nations League: Rodri and Modric both start on the bench for Spain v Croatia

Spain and Croatia go into their Nations League meeting without two of the most familiar names in either midfield, after Rodri and Luka Modric were both named among the substitutes.

Spain, captained by goalkeeper Unai Simón, start with Pubill, Cubarsí, Huijsen and Cucurella across the back, with Zubimendi, Fabián Ruiz, Fermín, Lamine Yamal, Baena and Oyarzabal completing the side. The bench offers Luis de la Fuente a deep range of options in Raya, Martínez, Grimaldo, Fresneda, Merino, Ferran Torres, Olmo, Muñoz, Laporte, Rodri, Williams and Pedri.

Croatia begin with Livakovic in goal behind Smolcic, Pongracic, Gvardiol and Sutalo, with Ivan Perisic captaining the team. Kovacic, Misic, Petar Sucic, Marco Pasalic and Beljo make up the rest of the starting line-up. Among the substitutes are Pandur, Kotarski, Vuskovic, Ivanovic, Kramaric, Modric, Budimir, Vlasic, Mario Pasalic, Baturina, Jakic and Sucic.

The Spain-Croatia fixture is one of seven Nations League matches kicking off at 7.45pm BST. Scotland host Switzerland, while Slovenia meet North Macedonia, Luxembourg face Iceland, Bulgaria take on Estonia, Slovakia play Kazakhstan and San Marino welcome Albania. Czechia against England is also being played.

At Hampden, the new Scotland manager, Sébastien Pocognoli, spoke about Billy Gilmour ahead of the Switzerland game. “I just want Billy to enjoy his football with a smile,” he said. “If he can do that, the rest will come. I remember him well when he was in Brighton. I thought he was fantastic for them.”
