Real Madrid maintained their perfect start to the Champions League campaign by beating RB Leipzig 4-1 on Wednesday, a third victory in as many games for José Mourinho’s side. Bernardo Silva opened the scoring from close range towards the end of a tight first half, and Arda Guler doubled the advantage soon after the interval for the record 15-time European champions. Kylian Mbappé bent home a third before Tidiam Gomis pulled one back for Leipzig, and Yan Diomande capped the win late on by ramming a volley into the top corner.
Mbappé, who has scored in each of Madrid’s Champions League matches this season and has 12 goals in 12 games, stressed the value of every point in the league phase. ‘We know every point is important to get into the top eight, we know we have to win as many games as possible – we’ve won three and there are five to go,’ he said. The France forward, who hopes to win the Ballon d’Or next week, added: ‘I’m doing well [but] I think I can do more. I’m one of the few players who always has to demand more from himself … right now it’s a good moment, but we have to keep going and I have to do more.’
Lask produced the standout result elsewhere as they came from behind to earn their first Champions League win of the season at Sporting. The Austrian champions fell behind to Luis Suárez’s fifth-minute penalty but equalised 10 minutes later through Christoph Lang. Sasa Kalajdzic and Krystof Danek then put the visitors 3-1 up at the Estádio José Alvalade, Kalajdzic rounding off a smart team move and Danek firing in at the near post. Suárez scored again for Sporting late on, but it was not enough.
Galatasaray swept past Lille 4-2 at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, taking the lead after two minutes through Yunus Akgun. Lille levelled via Soriba Diaoune, who then put them 2-1 up in the 39th minute, only for Aleksey Batrakov to make it 2-2 just before half-time. Galatasaray sealed the win through an own goal from Nabil Bentaleb and Victor Osimhen, who was facing his former club.
Inter had Alessandro Bastoni sent off midway through the second half for two yellow cards in as many minutes before Carlos Augusto’s late goal secured a 1-0 home win over Shakhtar Donetsk. Carlos Augusto finished a lightning-fast counterattack with a low finish in the 77th minute, giving the Italian champions their first points of the league phase.
Real Betis made it three wins from three in the Champions League by beating Feyenoord 1-0 through Isco’s penalty. Betis had the lion’s share of the chances but broke the deadlock only when Jeremiah St Juste was adjudged to have handled in the box. Isco stepped up and fired low into the right-hand corner for what proved to be the winner.
Club Brugge defeated Lens 3-0 at the Jan Breydel Stadium. Hans Vanaken put the Belgians ahead in first-half stoppage time, and Joaquin Seys and Carlos Forbs secured the win in the second half.
