Sunderland’s winning start to the Europa League ended with a 1-1 draw away to Lech Poznan, though the point leaves them unbeaten in Europe this season after victories over AZ Alkmaar and Torreense. Régis Le Bris made six changes from the Premier League defeat at Bournemouth, handing Habib Diarra a first start of the season after injury, and Sunderland needed only two minutes to go ahead. Nilson Angulo intercepted a tame pass from Mateusz Lis and crossed for Timur Tutierov to nod in; it was only the third competitive start for Tutierov since he joined Sunderland’s academy in 2023.
Sunderland had chances to extend their lead, with Malick Fofana hitting the post and Nordi Mukiele forcing a strong save from Lis. Lech Poznan responded and equalised in the 70th minute through substitute Leo Bengtsson’s low strike. Robin Roefs made a point-blank stop from Michal Gurgul as Poznan almost took the lead, while Chris Rigg’s powerful shot for Sunderland landed on the roof of the net as the spoils were shared.
Celtic suffered more Europa League pain as Celta Vigo came from behind to win 2-1 at Parkhead. Martin O’Neill’s side had already lost to Ferencvaros and Benfica in their first two league-phase fixtures, and although Mika Baur fired them in front just over a minute into the second half, Javi Rodríguez scored twice in three minutes — a header and an unstoppable drive — to stun the home side. Celtic’s ultras group, the Green Brigade, boycotted the game in protest at the running of the club, while 3,000 Celta Vigo fans helped the noise. The defeat was another damaging European night for the Scottish champions, who were knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by LASK on a 5-4 aggregate after being 4-0 up at one stage earlier in the season.
Crystal Palace could not capitalise on a Besiktas red card and drew 2-2 in Istanbul. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored on his first start since the opening day, but Palace had to respond after Wilfred Ndidi opened the scoring for the hosts in first-half stoppage time. Yéremy Pino levelled six minutes after the restart, and Mateta — whose first-half goal had been chalked off by VAR — fired Palace ahead four minutes later. Junior Olaitan equalised in the 73rd minute, and Palace could not find a winner after Umit Akdag was sent off in the 77th for a clumsy challenge on Jørgen Strand Larsen, who was forced off. Palace had been looking to bounce back from Sunday’s 5-0 defeat at Brighton and were the superior side before Ndidi scored.
Juventus dropped their first points of the Europa League campaign after drawing 2-2 with Rennes. Zeki Celik gave Juventus a fifth-minute lead, but Musa Al-Taamari equalised 10 minutes later with his first goal in the competition, and Boulaye Dia put Rennes ahead from the penalty spot two minutes before the break. Nick Woltemade equalised from the spot in the 67th minute, and Juventus thought they had won it in the 88th when Jhon Lucumí found the net from close range, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. The draw spared Juventus a second successive defeat following Sunday’s 3-0 home loss to Lazio in Serie A.
Bayer Leverkusen moved top of the table with a 2-0 win at OFI Crete, their third straight victory. Jonas Hofmann made the most of a surprise start by scoring twice in three minutes, having been added to the side following an injury to Martin Terrier. Leverkusen have nine points and lead Ferencvaros on goal difference after the Hungarian side beat Torreense 4-1. Crete, who had stunned Hoffenheim 2-0 in their opening league-phase match, were twice caught napping by Hofmann.
