The History of Catenaccio and Italian Defensive Football

Catenaccio — literally “door-bolt” in Italian — refers to a defensive system built around a designated sweeper positioned behind the main defensive line, ready to clear any ball that got through. The approach became closely associated with Inter Milan under coach Helenio Herrera in the 1960s, whose sides won multiple European Cups built on disciplined, low-risk defending combined with clinical, efficient attacking.

While the pure form of catenaccio faded from the modern game, its underlying emphasis on defensive organisation and game management remained embedded in Italian coaching for decades afterward, and Serie A’s reputation for tactical sophistication is still frequently traced back to that era.
