The USMNT face Canada in an international friendly at Allianz Field in Saint Paul, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm ET.
The fixture follows a 3-0 win over Mexico, a result that produced one of the standout moments of the window when Cavan Sullivan scored with a long-range chip.
What makes Sullivan’s finish notable, beyond its historic nature, is how ordinary this stretch has become for the US squad. All but one of the 13 potential debutants called in by Mauricio Pochettino have seen time on the field, and most of them have impressed while doing so. As Jeff Rueter put it, the remarkable thing about Sullivan’s moment is how normal it is for this window.
The individual numbers back that up. Julian Hall, 18, has scored in all three of his appearances. Mathis Albert broke Christian Pulisic’s decade-old benchmark to become the youngest goalscorer in the programme’s history, then held that record for just four days before Sullivan’s chip took it from him.
The opponents involved mean these players have not been eased in gradually. They have been thrown in at the deep end, and they are swimming. The USMNT’s kids are thriving, and, in Rueter’s words, they have a bit of swag to them.
