Waddingham’s lucky late winner lifts Portsmouth as Norwich end losing run

Thomas Waddingham gave Portsmouth a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Millwall at Fratton Park, settling an error-strewn contest in the 82nd minute when Jake Cooper’s attempted clearance struck him and went into the net. It was a fortunate decisive moment for Portsmouth, who have now won three of their last four matches. Millwall’s recent form remains a concern, with just six points taken from their past seven games.

Millwall had gone ahead early through Jenson Metcalfe after a mistake by Portsmouth goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid. Portsmouth were level quickly, however, when Lyndon Dykes turned the ball into his own net. The match stayed scrappy until Waddingham’s late intervention.

Sheffield United drew 1-1 with 10-man Derby at Bramall Lane, but Patrick Bamford was injured in the act of scoring the equaliser. Bobby Clark had given Derby a first-half lead, and Bamford levelled in the 79th minute before going off after falling awkwardly.

Norwich ended a six-match losing streak with a 3-1 comeback win at Charlton, easing the pressure on head coach Philippe Clement. Charlie Kelman put Charlton ahead early, but Paris Maghoma equalised, Mathias Kvistgaarden put Norwich in front and an Ivan Mesik own goal completed the scoring. It was Charlton’s first defeat at The Valley this season and left them without a win in nine Championship matches.

Middlesbrough’s 5-1 win at Bolton on Friday, in which Will Lankshear scored twice, took them top overnight. Aidan Morris, Lankshear and a Lewis Brunt own goal had Middlesbrough in control before Thelonius Bair replied in first-half stoppage time. Amario Cozier-Duberry made it 4-1 after 73 minutes and Lankshear added his second, and his 11th league goal, five minutes later. Swansea or West Ham could displace Middlesbrough on Saturday.

In League One, Callum Marshall scored a stoppage-time winner as Luton beat 10-man Leicester 2-1, increasing the pressure on Leicester manager Russell Martin. Jordan Clark set up Nakhi Wells for Luton’s opener, Liam Cullen equalised five minutes after John Lundstram’s second yellow card, but Marshall struck in the fourth minute of added time. Huddersfield moved top with a 2-1 victory over bottom club Wigan, with Ilias Bronkhorst and Derensili Sanches Fernandes scoring before Christian Saydee replied late.

In League Two, Charlie McCann’s fifth-minute goal gave Cheltenham a 1-0 win over Newport, while Wyll Stanway saved a penalty to secure the points. Northampton climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over Colchester, and Swindon’s derby at Bristol Rovers ended goalless.
