Wrexham’s Nathan Broadhead to miss Wales’ Nations League games with thigh injury

Wrexham forward Nathan Broadhead will miss Wales’ upcoming international camp after straining his thigh in training. The 28-year-old had been named in Craig Bellamy’s 28-man squad for Wales’ Nations League A fixtures against Portugal, Norway and Denmark, but will now withdraw because of the injury.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson confirmed the problem, saying: “Broady has strained his thigh in training, which is a shame because he was training well.” He added: “That’s going to keep him out for the weekend but there’s nothing new from that.” Asked whether the injury would also rule Broadhead out of the Wales camp, Parkinson replied: “Yes.”

The injury means Broadhead will also miss Wrexham’s Championship fixture with Southampton on Saturday (15:00 BST). The 20-cap international started Wrexham’s opening three Championship matches of the season but did not feature in the club’s fixtures against Millwall, Swansea City, Burnley and West Ham United.

Wales begin their four-match international break away to Portugal on 24 September. They then travel to Copenhagen to face Denmark, before World Cup quarter-finalists Norway visit Cardiff on 1 October and Denmark return to the Welsh capital on 4 October.

Parkinson also confirmed that Josh Windass and Ben Sheaf are in contention to face Southampton at the Racecourse Ground. Windass, last season’s top scorer, was withdrawn at half-time of Wrexham’s 1-1 draw with Burnley on 8 September and was an unused substitute in the 6-0 defeat to West Ham United three days later. Sheaf is yet to feature this season because of an ongoing knee issue.

“Josh is fine, he’s had a really good week and I’m pleased with him this week,” Parkinson said. “I felt he needed a good week on the training ground and he’s been firing. Ben’s also had a good week on the training ground, which he needed also.”
