Zigiotti Olme punishes Keating error as Manchester United edge Liverpool

Manchester United beat Liverpool 1-0 at the Unity Stadium, the only goal of the game arriving after just six minutes through Julia Zigiotti Olme. The win was Eva Olid’s second in the Women’s Super League this season and made it back-to-back league victories for her side.

It was a moment England goalkeeper Khiara Keating will want to forget. Her pass out from the back was intercepted by Zigiotti Olme, who composed herself before chipping the ball home in superb style, leaving Liverpool’s defence with no chance to recover.

The visitors responded and pushed for a leveller, drawing a double save from United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce midway through the first half. Cornelia Kapocs had a low effort kept out, and Tullis-Joyce got back to her feet quickly enough to deny Beata Olsson on the rebound as well.

United came close to doubling their lead before the interval. Jess Park struck the crossbar with a left-footed effort from the edge of the box, and Keating then saved at her near post from Andrea Medina on the rebound. Liverpool’s clearest opening for an equaliser arrived 20 minutes from time, when Jenna Clark found herself free at a corner but could not direct her header on target.

Gareth Taylor’s side applied late pressure in search of a goal, but United held on. The result continues a sharp turnaround for Olid, whose shaky start as head coach has given way to four consecutive victories in all competitions, with United now unbeaten in five matches.

The occasion carried added significance: this was United’s 250th match since the team reformed in 2018, and Olid watched her players mark it with the breakthrough that settled the game. The three points move United level with Liverpool in the WSL, with both clubs sitting three points off the European places.
