Cristiano Ronaldo sits out Portugal’s win over Norway — his first full competitive match on the bench since 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo did not play a single minute of Portugal’s Nations League victory over Norway, remaining on the bench for the entire match despite being fully available. The sight of the captain unused became the defining image of the matchday, with the cameras returning to him repeatedly as the game wore on.

The statistics behind the omission are what made it remarkable. The last time Ronaldo spent an entire match on the bench came in a June 2024 friendly against Croatia. The last comparable occasion in a genuine competitive fixture — one with points or qualification at stake — was on 15 June 2008, in a European Championship group game against Switzerland that Portugal lost having already secured qualification. That is a gap of 6,678 days.

Late in the match Ronaldo went out to warm up along the touchline, itself an unusual sight, but he was not brought on. Portugal’s new coach, Jorge Jesus, said the plan had been for a late appearance. “We had even agreed with him that he would come on in the last half hour, but the match did not require it. Gonçalo Ramos was playing well, he had scored a goal, another had been disallowed, I felt that it was not the right time to substitute him,” Jesus said.

Jesus, who had started Ronaldo against Wales, dismissed any suggestion that the decision was about fitness. “It was not to protect him physically, because he was in condition to play for as long as I wanted him to,” he said, adding that the flow of the game dictated the call. “The match ran its course and it stopped being the right moment for Cris to come on; instead, another player was needed to guarantee balance and the result.”

The coach insisted the bench role does not signal a wider exclusion. “It was a decision. I didn’t think it was the ideal moment, I needed a player with different characteristics, but that doesn’t mean he’s ruled out, quite the opposite. Perhaps now, against Denmark, he’ll play,” Jesus said, indicating Ronaldo could feature in Portugal’s next fixture. He also denied that Gonçalo Ramos, scorer of the second goal, had simply been given more playing time.

Ronaldo’s reaction was muted. He remained serious on the bench throughout and, when the referee blew the final whistle, went straight to the dressing room rather than joining his teammates on the pitch to applaud the supporters who had backed the team.
